A green checkmark next to your business name on a Google search result is worth more than most contractors realize. It is the only third-party trust signal a homeowner sees before they even click. Star ratings, BBB seals, NATE certifications, all of those live deeper in the page. The Google Guaranteed badge sits at the top, attached to the listing that gets called first.

The badge is also the only consumer-facing program where Google itself stands behind your work financially. If the customer is unhappy with a job they booked through your Local Services listing, Google reimburses them up to $2,000. That backing changes the calculus for every homeowner deciding between three listings in an LSA pack.

This piece covers the eligibility rules, the disqualifiers, the actual lift the badge produces, and where the badge does and doesn’t appear once you have it.

What the Badge Means to a Consumer

When a homeowner sees the green checkmark on a Local Services Ad, they are seeing four things at once: Google verified the business license, Google verified insurance is current, every technician passed a background check, and Google will refund the homeowner up to $2,000 if the work isn’t done right.

That last piece is the one most contractors don’t market. Homeowners do not see it explained anywhere obvious in the SERP, but it is the basis of the trust. In our experience reviewing customer recordings, the most common reason a homeowner mentions for choosing one LSA over another is “they had the Google guarantee.” They rarely know the financial cap, but they know the symbol means accountability.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, your business must clear five gates.

First, you must operate in an eligible vertical. As of 2026, that includes the major home services categories: HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, garage door, pest control, locksmith, appliance repair, water damage, junk removal, lawn care, tree service, cleaning, window cleaning, moving, and several others. Outside home services, eligible verticals include legal, real estate, financial planning, education tutoring, and a small set of healthcare specialties.

Second, you must hold the trade licenses required in your jurisdiction. Google verifies license number, licensee name, jurisdiction, and expiration date against the public license database. Sole proprietors with a personal trade license can qualify, as can LLCs and corporations.

Third, you must carry general liability insurance, typically $1 million per occurrence minimum. The certificate of insurance must match the legal business name on the application. Workers’ compensation is required if you have employees, with state-specific exemption letters accepted for sole proprietors where allowed.

Fourth, every owner and every technician must pass a third-party background check. Google contracts with Pinkerton or Evident depending on jurisdiction. The check covers criminal history and identity verification. A clean record clears in 3 to 5 business days. Records with hits may go to manual review for 10 to 20 days and may or may not pass depending on the offense and how recent it is.

Fifth, the business must pass a verification phone call from a Google Local Services representative confirming name, address, service area, and services offered.

What Disqualifies a Business

The most common disqualifiers, in order of how often we see them:

The last point matters. The Google Guaranteed badge is not a one-time award. Google can and does revoke it. Accounts with high cancellation rates, frequent disputed leads, or a string of one- and two-star reviews receive warnings and eventually lose the badge. The dispute and refund obligations sit underneath the badge, so Google’s incentive is to revoke from contractors who generate refund requests.

The Click-Through Lift

The badge moves CTR by roughly 22 percent on Local Services listings compared to equivalent listings without it, based on Google’s own published research and the LSA accounts we manage at RYN Digital. Some verticals see less (locksmith, junk removal), some see more (HVAC, roofing, plumbing emergency).

The lift compounds. Higher CTR feeds Google’s bidding algorithm signal that your listing is preferred. That bumps your average ranking inside the LSA pack. Higher rank, in turn, drives more impressions. Within 30 to 60 days of the badge going live, contractors typically see total LSA call volume rise 35 to 50 percent compared to the pre-badge baseline if everything else stays equal.

The badge also changes close rate on the calls that do come in. Homeowners who call a badged contractor are more pre-committed than homeowners who call from organic search or even a paid search ad. We see close rates 8 to 12 percentage points higher on LSA leads versus search leads in the same account.

What the Badge Costs

The badge itself has no fee. The Google Guarantee program is bundled into Local Services Ads. You pay per lead, not for the badge, and the customer-protection guarantee Google extends is funded by Google, not by you.

That said, the badge only displays on Local Services placements. If you want the trust signal but you also want to run search ads, the badge does not appear on standard search campaigns. Some contractors solve this by running both LSAs and search ads, anchoring the LSA placement at the top of the page with the badge and using search below it for additional impressions on long-tail queries.

The actual lead cost on LSAs in home services runs $35 to $75 in most metros. That compares to $88 to $130 for tracked search-ad lead costs in the same verticals. The badge isn’t the only reason LSA leads are cheaper, but it’s the largest single driver.

Verticals That Currently Qualify

Home services categories with Google Guaranteed available in 2026:

Outside home services, the program runs under the related “Google Screened” badge for professional services (legal, real estate, financial planning, certain healthcare). Google Screened uses a similar verification process but without the financial guarantee component, since those services don’t fit the same dispute model.

What the Badge Doesn’t Do

Three things the badge will not solve.

It will not fix a slow phone answer rate. If your team takes 4 rings to pick up, callers hang up and try the next badged business. Average answer time on healthy LSA accounts is under 12 seconds.

It will not fix a poor call script. Homeowners calling badged businesses still need to be qualified, scheduled, and converted. A booked-rate gap between a strong CSR team and a weak one can be 30 percentage points. The badge gets you the call; the call still has to convert.

It will not protect you from accumulated negative reviews. Once a few one-star reviews appear on your LSA profile, the badge cannot offset them. Reviews on LSA profiles are visible directly in the search result and influence which badged listing a homeowner clicks. Stay above 4.5 stars on at least 30 reviews to maintain the lift.

We review LSA accounts together with search and tracking because most badge issues are tied to one of those upstream. The free Google Ads audit checks badge status, dispute rate, lead quality, answer time, and search overlap. Request the audit here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Google Guaranteed badge cost extra on top of LSA spend?

No. The badge is bundled with Local Services Ads. You pay per lead at the standard rates. Google funds the customer protection guarantee from its side. The badge has no separate subscription fee, application fee, or monthly cost.

How much is the customer protection guarantee actually worth per job?

Google reimburses unhappy customers up to $2,000 per job. The lifetime cap per business varies. In practice, refund requests are rare on well-run accounts, but the visible promise of protection is what drives the CTR lift, not the actual payout frequency.

Can the badge be revoked after I earn it?

Yes. Google revokes badges for accumulated complaints, high dispute rates, expired licenses or insurance, or repeated low ratings. Maintaining the badge requires ongoing compliance, not just one-time approval. Keep documents current and answer disputed leads inside 48 hours.

Do I need both LSAs and search ads to get full coverage?

Most home services accounts running both outperform either alone. LSAs capture top-of-funnel emergency demand with the badge as the trust anchor. Search ads capture mid-funnel research and long-tail queries that LSAs don’t trigger on. Splitting budget across both typically lifts total tracked leads 25 to 40 percent versus LSA-only.

What CTR lift does the badge actually produce?

Around 22 percent on average across verticals, based on Google’s published research and our own LSA account data. HVAC, roofing, and emergency plumbing see lifts on the higher end. Locksmith and junk removal see lower lifts because consumers in those categories are more transactional and less trust-driven.
